For me, tiramisu has to be homemade. Why? Because making homemade tiramisu is the best way to control the level of coffee in this creamy dessert. This is very important for someone like me, who doesn't really like the taste of coffee.
This world-famous Italian dessert is seductive in its simplicity and richness of flavor. Born in the heart of Italy in the 1960s, the tiramisu recipe has evolved to inspire many equally delicious variations. But preparing a classic homemade tiramisu is easy and promises a result that will delight every guest, without any headaches. As long as you have the right recipe!

The history of tiramisu: between tradition, mystery and delicacy
Everyone knows the unmistakable flavor of tiramisu, but few people really know where this mouth-watering Italian dessert comes from. Its history is a delicious mix of anecdotes, family secrets and culinary innovation. Over the years, tiramisu has established itself as one of the must-have desserts for festive meals.
The disputed origins of this mythical dessert
Tiramisu as we know it was born in Italy, of course. But the question that still divides Italians is: where exactly? The Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions dispute who first created this delicacy. Originally, this dessert was made with cookies, coffee and cream to provide energy. Its name literally means «pull me up".".
According to some culinary historians, the modern version of tiramisu originated in the 1960s, in a restaurant in Treviso, a town near Venice. The chef would have wanted to create a comforting, easy-to-serve dessert inspired by the simple ingredients found in every Italian home at the time: mascarpone, coffee, sugar, eggs and "Savoiardi" (or spoon) cookies.
For those interested in anecdotes or more detailed information on its origins, the Wikipedia page on the tiramisu takes an in-depth look at the versions and traditions surrounding the birth of this dessert.

Essential ingredients for a successful homemade tiramisu
To make a homemade tiramisu that everyone will love, it's essential to choose each ingredient carefully. Whatever your recipe, the quality of the ingredients can make all the difference.
Classic ingredients: the basis of the perfect tiramisu
Tiramisu doesn't contain many ingredients:
- Mascarpone The star of tiramisu! Choose a fresh, rich, creamy mascarpone made from milk of controlled origin. Its taste should be mild, with no acidity.
- Savoiardi" cookies (or with a spoon/ lady's finger) Their light texture absorbs coffee perfectly. Make sure they are soft and not too dry.
- Strong coffee Italian espresso or full-bodied coffee, the taste must remain intense so as not to be drowned out by the cream.
- Fresh eggs : Choose them from free-range hens; their freshness is essential, as they will not be cooked.
- Powdered sugar It balances the bitterness of coffee.
- Unsweetened cocoa Sprinkled on top, it completes the whole with a touch of bitterness.

Vegan alternatives: tiramisu for everyone
The vegan version of tiramisu has nothing to envy from the classic recipe. All you need to do is adapt some of the ingredients, while retaining the easy, homemade spirit:
- Replace raw eggs Use heavy soy cream, silky tofu or vegetable chantilly to add smoothness and lightness to the cream. Mix with mascarpone for an airy, creamy texture.
- Egg-free cookies : There are vegan spoon cookies, often found in organic stores.
- Vegetable mascarpone If you'd like a 100 % plant-based version, try cashew or almond-based mascarpone, which needs to be very smooth.
Note I don't’I haven't tried a vegan version yet, so I don't know whether replacing the ingredients is enough or whether the quantities also need to be adjusted.

Tips for customizing your homemade tiramisu
There's more to tiramisu than the classic recipe! Let your imagination run wild: add fruit, chocolate, a hint of alcohol or opt for a light version for a dessert that's even more your own. Here are a few simple ideas to vary the pleasures:
- Chocolate Add chocolate shavings between layers, or make an intense cocoa tiramisu for fans of gourmet sweetness.
- Alcohol A drizzle of marsala or almond liqueur in the coffee enhances the flavours.
- Light version Replace some of the mascarpone with fromage frais or plant-based yoghurt, and opt for wholegrain or less refined sugar.
- Replace cookies with speculoos Perfect for an original fragrance.
- You don't’don't like coffee much? The secret to reducing the taste of coffee is to play with the concentration of coffee. To reduce the taste of coffee, don't let the cookies soak in the coffee for too long.
Everyone can make this flagship dessert of Italian cuisine their own, and make it as healthy or gourmet as they like, while respecting the dietary choices of each guest.

How to store homemade tiramisu
Here are a few tips for storing your homemade tiramisu, whether you need to prepare your dessert the day before, or, because you didn't eat it all at once.
- Always cool Tiramisu should be placed in the refrigerator as soon as it is assembled. The mascarpone and egg cream should be kept at a stable temperature, around 4°C.
- Shelf life A homemade tiramisu can generally be kept for 24 to 48 hours. After this time, the texture may become too moist, and the flavors less pronounced. For vegetarian recipes using silken tofu or vegetable creams, this timeframe remains the same.
- Cover tightly To prevent the dessert from absorbing odors from the fridge, cover the dish with cling film or an airtight lid.
- Transport : If you're taking your tiramisu home with you, make sure it's in an airtight, rigid container to avoid any accidents.
Bonus tip Do not sprinkle the cocoa before serving, as it will moisten and lose its powdery texture. If possible, add it just before presenting your tiramisu.

Conclusion
Tiramisu, an easy-to-make recipe, retains all its charm when homemade. Every cook, novice or enthusiast, can adapt this Italian dessert to his or her own preferences. Imagine, I don't drink coffee because I don't like the taste, but I love this tiramisu!
